Fiat Uno NEW!

The all NEW! Fiat Uno….

Yes, Fiat has finally decided to go through its archives and use a brand name which once was its bread and butter, the UNO

The first thing that comes to mind is all the POLICIA! cars in the European movies I have seen, but that apart the Uno was always one of the most important platforms in the history of Fiat and was also voted European car of the year in 1984

Now after more than 20 years, and a drastic change in the demographics of the traditional small car markets with Fuel and going GREEN as the new 21st century issues, a car this size and profile makes immense sense to a manufacturer having significant presence in small cars

Looking at the dimensions, the car looks pretty small and despite Fiat’s presence in the US through Chrysler, it is very unlikely for the car to be launched in North America

However it looks very promising for emerging markets like India, China , Brazil and its traditional home turf – Europe

Engine options may vary from 1 to 1.4 litre depending on respective configurations more so when Fiat wants to position this car somewhere between the Panda and the Grande Punto

Official figures and specs are yet to be revealed. Check this space for more on the NEW Uno

Fiat Punto

At last its here ; The Fiat Punto, aka Grande Punto, and its damn worth the wait Fiat made us do
The moment you look at it,u yell ITALIA, it looks every bit a piece of Italy, serious head turner.

But what Fiat did good this time around as against the past is not place it in the same bracket as their other offering, the Linea, and then u suddenly realize that, Fiat has made us love everything Italian, from the designs to the Multijet.

Now apart from the looks, which all of us would love, there is nothing that will stand out as much. Its quite a normal car inside.

But not boring at all. The dash and steering is shared with the Linea (sharing helps them cut costs etc etc), thats the excuse all car makers have these days.

U do get some options with engines though, as of now the 1.4 litre petrol (shared with linea as well) is on offer. And 89 horses are being claimed. U drive the Grande thing, and u’ll certainly doubt about the number in question.

A bit underpowered it seems at times, but should do the job in emerging markets like ours where turbo’s and Sports variants mean a hundred thousand bucks more rather than the increased performance.

Space is sufficient up front, but rear seats are not for the more than 6 feet tall. Try that in the showroom and get stuck unless a Tata guy comes up to pull you out (Tata is still handling much of Fiat sales and service )

There is no compromise in gadgets though. A decent music system, Blue and me which only god knows why its been put in a Fiat. ABS and 15inch wheels is the thing you get in the lux variants.

I would say ,not the best in class, but worth the head turns u would get. And to make sure Fiat does get those important footfalls in showrooms, pricing is PERFECT.
Rush to ur nearest dealer and dont bother to drive, just look at it, U’ll buy it.

Multijet 1.3

MultijetMultijet, Quadrajet, JTD, CRDI Turbo..etc etc..

Every bloody name above is the same engine. Well FIAT did design this particular one, but thrs nothing as gr8 about it as it sounds. Its nothing but a CRDI turbo diesel engine developed specifically for the FIAT family of cars and as every bloody manufacturer does these days..share it with a dozen other companies and call it joint venture or MOU of some sort.

Moral of the story:- Almost every bloody small/mid sized car in Europe, Asia and other continents has ended up with this heart with different names (obviously).

Now why the hell small car majors are fighting their asses out to get one of these?
Well, CRDI may seem like an easy piece of technology which any mechanic Joe might fix. But trust me, its quite a task to get the best out of a Common Rail, and FIAT did this in a very Italian way….”fantastic” that is.

And u know, rest is history. But this family of engines is basically JTD (stands for Uni Jet Turbo Diesel)
and thy holy word “Multijet” is the 2nd generation of this same JTD engine.
And this little baby is not as tiny, cos it comes in a dozen different capacities. Rite from 1.3 70PS (which we in India are hell aware of) till “3 litres”. Yeah turbo3.0 from Fiat, and a good one actually.

For us though its the 1.3 (Fiat Linea, Tata Indica Vista, Maruti Suzuki Swift/Dezire), less on power, gr8 on mileage.
All n all a real good option for Indian market. I would rate it 4 out of 5.

Chek dis space for more about the JTD (Multijet) family….
