Some confusions in the world of wheels..

Its one of those things that all of us have heard of, yet never got more of an insight into ,something like Winter Olympics…

Lets break it down to get hold of this confusion :

1. Combustion : Anything burning which produces some energy

2. Two basic components to complete combustion : Fuel and Oxygen (Air)

3. Turbo (or boosting/charging , as known in the Automotive world) is basically tweaking the Air part in Step 2.

If this volume of air can be increased at the site of combustion, then there is a very good chance to amplify the combustion process with added fuel to extract more energy (Horse-power in this case)

Turbocharger (technically a compressor) : Is a component (not a machine) which basically does the job of increasing the air-flow to the inlet manifold (This is where all the air enters the combustion chamber in an engine)

And TA-RA ; more power at the press of the pedal..

How it works : Jugaad (Improvisation) ; Yes, that is how it works… We are well aware of the exhaust gases that are released from a vehicle. This very exhaust has some energy (discharge) , and this energy is used to drive a small pump.

This small pump in turn pumps air inside the inlet manifold at increased pressure which eventually helps in better combustion (Technically, the volumetric efficiency is increased)

Implications : More power from the same capacity engine, more efficient as it uses the exhaust itself to increase the power eventually ; But there’s a catch >>

The catch – There is a minimum optimum speed , only beyond which the turbo really starts working. This effect is better known as lag , which all diesel car owners complain of.

NOTE :- The superb-looking thing on the hood of this car (Dodge Charger) is NOT a turbo charger A turbocharger is usually an internal (beneath the hood) component. The Dodge here is having a Supercharger..

Supercharger :- Does the same thing as a Turbocharger. The only difference is how it (the pump) gets the power to operate. Here, it operates through a belt (usually coupled to the crankshaft) and not exhaust gases.

Advantage : As the car goes faster, the supercharger acts faster as well, and more air is delivered, so increses almost linearly with the speed of the car (crankshaft)

Disadvanatage : Since a supercharger is coupled to a mechanical part, it consumes some energy from the final output, and so is less-efficient than a turbocharger.


Pentastar V6

Pentastar : Thats the name of the new hope that the giant Chrysler Group is betting on.

After the recession, bailouts, trimming and their final destiny with FIAT, Chrysler had to come out with a plan for the future

And the plan is to share platforms and engines

The result is this brand new engine : The Pentastar V6

Its an all aluminum ,60-degree, DOHC unit with proposed use in a lot of platforms and in various capacities.

Power output is a healthy 280 hp @ 6400 rpm and a torque of 260 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm and it has a green dimension to it ; as it is 11% more fuel efficient than the previous engines.

And the engine will be made in 3 basic sizes : 3.0L, 3.3L, 3.6L

The Pentastar is slated to be launched with the JEEP Grand Cherokee 2011 and this unit is supposed to replace a host of current V6 options that Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge have.

After almost $ 2 billion worth of investments for this project with two plants slated to start production immediately and later in Germany for Mercedes-Benz (yes, the pointed star is planning to use one of these) and the Fiat connection to make it to Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

Chrysler hopes to strike with the Pentastar and has pushed hard for the unit to make it big…..

Hemi engine

Reality Check: IT IS HUGE

The construction of this beast is very as it sounds. Basically an IC engine but with “Hemi-Spherical” Combustion chambers

The HEmi shape is the unique feature which adds up to the bulk of the volume it looks.

This very shape was initially mastered by the European elite : namely BMW, Alfa Romeo ,Daimler etc etc who themselves were inspired by the cannon; just the shape  (no, thrs no Arsenal FC  connection to this)

But it was taken to a very new level of popularism by CHRYSLER. Yeah, they have had the beast with them for quite long now.

They made three significant versions of the Hemi in the last century starting with the Firepower in the 50’s, the 426 in the 70’s and the HEMI in 2000’s

The American Muscle Car was coined by the very Hemi marketing in the 60’s and 70’s.

Apart from the Chrysler, many companies tried their luck and work with the same tech; notable Ford, Aston Martin and Mitsubishi to relative degree of success

Under the Hood :- Due to its very peculiar design, the inlet and outlet valves had to be placed opposite to each other in the combustion chamber but there was a catch to this huge engine : the air-fuel mixture had a very tricky shaped volume to cover which resulted in valve timing to become a very sublime affair to fix in these engines

In all, this very engine will be remembered as the chosen one which challenged the respect commanded by the conventional Inline and V8’s in the mid ages (of the automotive world) and still rules some hearts.

Multijet 1.3

MultijetMultijet, Quadrajet, JTD, CRDI Turbo..etc etc..

Every bloody name above is the same engine. Well FIAT did design this particular one, but thrs nothing as gr8 about it as it sounds. Its nothing but a CRDI turbo diesel engine developed specifically for the FIAT family of cars and as every bloody manufacturer does these days..share it with a dozen other companies and call it joint venture or MOU of some sort.

Moral of the story:- Almost every bloody small/mid sized car in Europe, Asia and other continents has ended up with this heart with different names (obviously).

Now why the hell small car majors are fighting their asses out to get one of these?
Well, CRDI may seem like an easy piece of technology which any mechanic Joe might fix. But trust me, its quite a task to get the best out of a Common Rail, and FIAT did this in a very Italian way….”fantastic” that is.

And u know, rest is history. But this family of engines is basically JTD (stands for Uni Jet Turbo Diesel)
and thy holy word “Multijet” is the 2nd generation of this same JTD engine.
And this little baby is not as tiny, cos it comes in a dozen different capacities. Rite from 1.3 70PS (which we in India are hell aware of) till “3 litres”. Yeah turbo3.0 from Fiat, and a good one actually.

For us though its the 1.3 (Fiat Linea, Tata Indica Vista, Maruti Suzuki Swift/Dezire), less on power, gr8 on mileage.
All n all a real good option for Indian market. I would rate it 4 out of 5.

The new buzz in town is this Kappa engine…

Developed by Hyundai Motors specifically for the smaller steel boxes running on the roads, or hatches to be less critical.

Now, what makes this engine “the special one” is the fact that this was designed by Hyundai for Indian and other similar markets (read South America, East Europe etc), and so as it turns out, it really is a hell of a fuel efficient heart.

Figures may vary depending on which platform is it used for. But dont be shocked, if u hear the numbers around 17+ kmpl (dis stands true not only in India but in other markets as well)

So where du u get thm? For us here, Hyundai is offering this sweetie with i10 as of now, but will later add to the entire B and B+ segment offerings depending on demand. In Europe however, i20 along with the i10 gets the offering as standard.

Now be4 we come to specifications, the Kappa will b manufactured in two capacities :- 1.25 and 1.2 litres.
We here will get only the 1.2, the other being mainly for West.

All n all a 1.2 which delivers around 80ps is not at all bad and is actually worth those xtra bugs.
9 out of 10 for me…
